GPS systems are known for their accuracy but occasionally, one may get error signals on their GPS device. These errors can be experienced in any type of GPS device and so it helps that one is aware of the possible causes. GPS errors will affect the accuracy of the readings or instructions one gets.
GPS errors will be experienced due to the following factors:
Difference in accuracy between a receiver’s built- in- clock GPS satellite atomic clocks – Atomic clocks tend to be higher in accuracy, and it is this difference that will result in errors being experienced
When a GPS receiver’s visibility of satellites is interfered with – The more satellites that are visible to a GPS receiver, the higher its accuracy. A GPS receiver’s visibility will be affected by buildings, vegetatation, other electronic devices or if the device is used under water, in an indoor environment or at below the ground levels.
Atmospheric factors - Satellite signals are slowed down as they pass through the atmosphere. However, most GPS devices have inbuilt features to correct this anomaly.
When there is intentional degrading of the satellite signal – This can be done for defensive purposes by a given state or within a given territory. For example, signal degrading can be done for purposes of a state protecting its citizenry against a noted enemy.
Obstruction by physical features - Sometimes GPS signals are obstructed by such features like tall buildings, trees or rocks, which affects the travel period of the signal, in such a situation, errors will be created. Geometry of the satellite – There is better signal when the satellite geometry has a wide angle bearing and so when the satellite geometry is linear or when the grouping is tight, signal errors will be noted.
Inaccurate location reporting – Errors will be experienced when there is inaccurate reporting of a satellite’s location also known as orbital errors
Next time you experience errors in your GPS device, the causes could be any of the above. Being aware of the possible causes of these errors will make the inconvenience more bearable!
